In a bid to protect the ecology of the Kumarakom bird sanctuary, the Kerala High Court recently directed the state government and the Taj Kerala Hotels and Resorts Ltd not to cut, destruct, alter, damage or remove mangroves from the bird sanctuary of the Kumarakom Tourist Complex. The court also asked them not to lay roads through the sanctuary till a petition on the issue is disposed of. The petitioner has sought a direction to the departments of science, technology and environment to set up an expert committee to preserve the mangroves.
