Seminar in Delhi

Published: Wednesday 31 May 2000

officials and activists from government and non-government organisations ( ngo s) engaged in heated debate at a seminar held recently in Delhi on solid waste management in the city. Organised by the Institute of Social Sciences ( iss ), the meeting was attended by representatives from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi ( mcd ), Central Pollution Control Board ( cpcb ), Tata Energy Research Institute ( teri ), Srishti and the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute.

Archana Ghosh from iss said, " mcd has taken new initiatives (in waste management) after the Supreme Court's intervention. But whatever has been done is not enough." While government officials felt there was no need for ngo s to interfere in waste management, which they said was a domain of the mcd , ngo s wanted to jointly conduct waste cleaning projects with the mcd .
