Workshop>> Films ÔÇó Pakistan
"I want to make a film about the unequal wages women peasants get compared to their male counterparts," 40-something Haseena Mallah said.
Mallah was one of the nine women who attended a two-week filmmaking workshop in Karachi, Pakistan. At the end of the workshop the women made Half Face, an engaging 10-minute film.
"They may not have been given the chance to read and write, but realised they could still make a film," said Danielle Spencer, trainer at the workshop organised by the international nonprofit Women's International Shared Experience.
Women had come from as far as Hyderabad. Half the group was unschooled, a few studied up to grade four, and none had used a computer. The women had not met before, but one thing was common. Each had experienced some form of sexual, physical or mental abuse.
