Smart, green technology

A semiconductor technology that could allow efficient, affordable production of electricity from a variety of energy sources without a turbine or similar generator has been invented. The invention is a result of hard work done by Peter L Hagelstein, a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, usa , and Yan Kucherov of The Netherlands-based eneco Incorporation, a pharmaceutical company. Among other advantages, devices made on the basis of the technology are two times more efficient than their closest commercial competitor. The new technology could have major implications for the recovery of waste heat from power plants and automobiles (www.sciencedaily.com, November 30, 2001).
