Santiago: Veiled by smog The high level of air pollution in Santiago, the Chilean capital, recently forced local authorities to declare an environment emergency.

The pollution levels registered in at least two of the city's stations, which record particulate levels in the air, were found to be above permissible limits. This prompted the Santiago governor Victor Barrueto to declare a health emergency. Lack of rain in the Chilean capital this season has worsened the pollution in the city.
