The good old barter system is
back. To meet the demand for
duck meat, India will soon
import Vietnamese ducks in
exchange for Indian buffaloes.
According to the animal husbandry department secretary, J
P Singh, it was found that
Indian buffaloes were in
demand in Vietnam while
duck meat is very popular in
India's coastal areas and north
ern states. The only available
breed of ducks in India, Khaki
Campbell, was developed by
the duck research centre at
Hessarghatta near Bangalore.
India had made several
attempts in the past to. import
ducks. However., requests for
the -import of the famoui
Cherry Valley ducks of UK
and Vietnamese ducks were
turned down on the grounds
that the countries did not Want
to part with their "rare genetic
material" 'It was only the lure
of Indian buffaloes that made
Vietnam soften its stance and.
agrree to the barter.
