Climate change-induced drought has triggered a mass-movement of elephants from Zimbabwe’s biggest national park into neighbouring Botswana in a search for water and food.

Khunti district in Jharkhand is known for being the birthplace of tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda. Today, the region, which has a strong presence of Naxalites, is grappling with water scarcity courtesy the low rainfall in the region in monsoon 2023.

South Africa may be the only country that would send cheetahs to India in the future for its cheetah reintroduction project. The project flagged off on September 17, 2022 with 20 cheetahs arriving from South Africa and Namibia.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Bhopal have identified a Circular RNA, ciTRAN, whose role in HIV-1 virus replication has remained unclear for a long time, and also developed a molecule that could hinder viral transcription.

Record-breaking rainfall in Himachal Pradesh this year caused due to climate change is responsible for the spike in scrub typhus cases across the state, experts have told Down To Earth (DTE).

Over 500 of India’s 718 districts monitored by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) are currently reporting meteorological drought conditions, ranging from mildly dry to extremely dry, according to a new analysis by Down To Earth (DTE).

About 32 per cent of global anthropogenic methane emissions result from microbial processes that occur during the enteric fermentation of ruminant livestock and manure management systems, while another 8 per cent comes from rice paddies, a new report showed. To tackle this, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations suggested four strategies (discussed later) for better management of livestock.

The much-awaited second tiger reserve of Bihar is all set to come up either by the end of 2023 or early 2024, according to the officials of the Bihar Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department.
