Ashok Khosla, the president of New Delhi-based non-governmental organisation Development Alternatives, had not just the courage to think innovatively but also implement his unfashionable plans into action. It is for this reason alone that the 2002 Sasakawa environment prize, the top UN environment award, has been conferred upon him. Khosla has been honoured with the US $200,000 environment prize for teaching and fostering environmentally friendly, commercially viable technologies across India. Chairperson of the Sasakawa prize selection committee, Lord Stanley Clinton-Davis, praised Khosla as a "tireless defender of the environment".
