Vaccine shortage pushes Odisha to shut COVID-19 immunisation centres in 11 districts on Day 3 of ‘Tika Utsav’

Over 60 per cent of the total vaccination centres in Odisha are now closed

The Odisha government shut 895 vaccination centres in 11 of its 30 districts April 13, 2021 due to short supply of the doses. Immunisation against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is underway in 505 of the total 1,400 centres in the rest of the 19 districts. 

“We are expecting new stock to arrive soon,” said Bijay Panigrahi, director of the state health department. Over 4,500,000 people have been inoculated in Odisha since the vaccination drive started on January 16. 

The Centre launched a four-day nationwide immunisation drive ‘Tika Utsav’ on April 11, 2021.

Vaccination centers have been closed in Jajpur, Bhadrak, Puri, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Gajapati, Boudh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Dhenkanal and Koraput districts.

Odisha has recorded 353,083 COVID-19 cases, of which 10,503 are active. Over 1,900 people have succumbed to the infection to date. 

In the last 24 hours, the state added 1,784 cases and two deaths. This is the fifth straight day with over 1,000 new cases. Odisha last posted 1,700-plus cases on October 23, 2020.

Nuapada district bordering Chhattisgarh added the most cases (303) on April 13, 2021, followed by Sundargarh with 241 cases, Khurda with 201, Sambalpur with 114,  Bolangir with 91, Bargarh with 87, Ganjam with 80.  

The Odisha government is not allowing people to enter the state without a negative RT-PCR test report to check the spread of Covid-19. “Those travelling without RT-PCR negative report will have to undergo a seven-day mandatory quarantine,” said Suresh Chandra Mohapatra, chief secretary, Odisha.
