The French government's plan to build a new nuclear reactor near the port of Cherbourg in Normandy province has sparked large-scale protests in the country. Between 12,500 to 30,000 anti-nuclear people took to the streets to protest against Electricit de France, the country's main electricity provider, which plans to build a new-generation European Pressurised Reactor. The reactor will test a new technology that may replace France's existing 58 nuclear reactors when they are decommissioned. "Sortir du Nucleaire", an anti-nuclear group, and environmentalists, say the nearly US $4 billion to be spent on the project would be better expended on renewables and improving energy efficiency.
