Well, you might even be of the opinion that science is all about being an engineer, doctor or scientist. Careers In Science: A Complete Guide to a Successful Career in Science, by Dilip M Salwi, is the book you should be reading.

The book paints a contemporary picture of science and the many avenues it opens out for the young entrant. One could either plunge into it as a researcher, take up a professional course like medicine, maintain a secondary interest in it by say, becoming a forester or even apply one's business sense by marketing solar cookers, for instance.

A rather interesting section of the book lists certain scientific fields that are currently 'hot', like waste management, with the names and addresses of institutions in India associated with them. To kindle a deeper interest in science, the author provides a list of popular magazines, journals and books for further perusal. Sensibly priced at Rs 75, the book is within the reach of most.

Formerly employed as a senior scientist in the publications and information directorate of the CSIR, Salwi is a popular science writer with 28 books -- including science fiction and science-based dramas -- to his credit. The better-known ones are Scientists in India, Story of Zero and What is science?
