Receiving a Wildscreen Panda award is perhaps much more than music to the ears of a team that started off in 1988 by making ad jingles. Eight years later, Nikhil and Niret Alva have bagged what is more popularly known as the green Oscar for the series their com pany, Miditech TV, has been producing: Living on the Edge.
A prime-time environmental serial beamed on Doordarshan, Living on the Edge is an attempt to present the flip side of development. The bro thers intended it to be a coherent and straightforward approach to the subject rather than a purely emotional one. The honour -- bestowed on a young team whose average age is 25 years -- is the highest recognition any environmental film or series can receive.
Says Niret, "The series has changed the lives of everyone making it, be it about leaving the lights on or smoking."
Being the sons of Margaret Alva, MP, may not exactly have opened doors for them and the years ahead, in their opinion would find the numerous TV companies around packing up unless they create niches for themselves. A green niche and the Panda award would certainly stand Miditech in good stead.
