BWGs are the single largest source of municipal solid waste
Waste and Bulk Waste Urban India generates 1,54,000 tonnes of waste per day. Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) constitute 30-40 per cent (46,000–61,000 TPD) of this waste. This makes BWGs the single largest source of municipal solid waste.
But, what are BWGs? The Solid Waste Management Rules (SWM) 2016 defines the BWGs as those residential, commercial, government or private, educational, and social entities that generate an average rate of 100 kilogrammes or more waste per day.
SWM Rules 2016 coupled with Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organization's (CPHEEO), Manual provides a comprehensive guideline for cities to ensure BWG compliance.
