Hurricane Lee swept over Nova Scotia in Canada and Maine in the US after making landfall on September 16, 2023. The tropical storm brought ferocious winds and heavy rainfall, making its impact felt from the night of September 15 itself.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) aircrafts began collecting the images from September 17, 2023, and were released as a part of their National Geodetic Survey. A new aerial image released by the NOAA shows the extent of damage caused by the Atlantic tropical storm Lee.

Hurricane Lee started as a tropical depression in the central Atlantic Ocean on September 5, 2023. On September 7, it intensified into a Category 5 storm with a windspeed of 160 miles per hour (mph).

The storm uprooted trees and destroyed powerlines, plunging many neighbourhoods into darkness for hours together. In the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, around 144,000 people were without power over the weekend because of large disruptions.

The storm also submerged roads making movement impossible leading to several flights and ferries getting cancelled. One person in Maine was also killed after a big tree bough fell on his vehicle during strong winds.

Extreme weather has rattled Canada in 2023. The Canadian province of Nova Scotia has already faced at least three episodes of natural disasters this year, with a violent wildfire in May and deadly floods in July.

However, as Hurricane Lee is estimated to be weakening as it heads northward, another storm is brewing over the central Atlantic. Hurricane Nigel, the sixth hurricane to form in the Atlantic Ocean this season, developed into a Category 1 storm on September 18, 2023. Nigel developed shortly after Hurricane Lee landed in Nova Scotia as a post-tropical storm and it’s impact is yet to be seen
