Some 3,000 people have been displaced and 38 schools have been destroyed because of the eruption of Mt Sumeru in Indonesia
Mount Semeru, the tallest mountain on the island of Java, Indonesia, erupted dramatically December 4, 2021. It has killed at least 34 people on the island.
Clouds of hot ash and searing gas swept as far as 11 kilometres down Mt Semeru’s slopes. Towers of ash and hot clouds have blanketed nearby villages in East Java hampering rescue operations.
Till today, 3,000 people have been displaced and 38 schools have been destroyed. A strategic bridge connecting the city of Malang with the nearby district of Lumajang, has been severed.
Veterinarians have joined the rescue operations to treat animals suffering from burns, smoke inhalation and other injuries.
Indonesia’s president, Joko Widodo, visited the areas devastated by the powerful volcanic eruption. This was to reassure that the affected communities are quickly rebuilt.
Indonesia, with more than 270 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity as it sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” Indonesia has 76 active volcanoes, the most for any country in the world.
