Thousands started fleeing Goma city in DR Congo on May 27 after a second warning
Thousands started fleeing the city of Goma in Democratic Republic of Congo May 27, 2021 to escape another eruption from Mount Nyiragongo, one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
The first eruption rocked the city with a series of tremors and minor earthquakes. Authorities asked over a million people to evacuate from 10 of the city’s 18 districts.
Seismologists counted 61 quakes on Saturday (May 29), reported CNN. Scientists have detected magma around 4 kilometres underground; the tectonic activity can trigger another eruption.
Simultaneously, there were also media reports of a “false alarm” by the government.
The NASA (United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Earth Observatory May 25 had published satellite images of Mount Nyamulagira and Mt Nyiragongo erupting. Both are at the borders of DR Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.
