It is one of the most powerful storms to hit the region in decades
Typhoon Mangkhut, the mightiest storm this year so far, has killed at least 59 people in the Philippines before ripping through in Hong Kong and Macau on Sunday (September 16) with wind speed of 100 miles per hour. According to reports, it is one of the most powerful storms to hit the region in decades.
More than 200 people have been injured in Hong Kong, which, despite avoiding a direct hit, experienced winds more than 110mph with water levels surging by almost 12ft in some places.
Mangkhut brought torrential rains and storm surge. The storm sustained speed of up to 270 kph (165 mph) when the typhoon hit the Philippines on Saturday (September 15). Benguet is the hardest hit province where 38 people were reportedly killed and 37 more unaccounted for.
The Philippines reportedly lost 250,730 tonnes of paddy rice due to the strong typhoon.
After ravaging northern Philippines and affecting at least 250,000 people, it moved to Hong Kong and Macau before entering southern China.
Typhoon Mangkhut made landfall on the Chinese coast near Jiangmen city on Sunday afternoon. At least four people have been killed so far. Couple of weeks back, Japan was hit by the strongest typhoon in 25 years.
