Deaths in sewers and septic tanks

Eighty-three people died while cleaning sewers and septic tanks in 2019, according to a statement made by the Union Ministry of Social justice in the Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019. The ministry also said that there were 60,440 manual scavengers in 17 Indian states.

Impact of coal mines on environment

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) had notified the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006, as amended from time to time, under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, in order to minimise the adverse effect of coal mining on environment, Union Minister of Coal, Prahlad Joshi told the Lok Sabha. 

Electrical vehicle policy

The Union cabinet had approved Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Phase II  (FAME India Phase II) for promotion of electric mobility in the country. The scheme, with a total outlay of Rs 10,000 crore over a period of three years, was being implemented with effect from April 1, 2019, Union Minister of Planning, Rao Inderjit Singh  told the Lok Sabha. 

Eradication of child labour

According to the 2011 census, the total number of child workers in the age group of 5-14 years was 43,53,247, Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Santosh Gangwar told the Rajya Sabha. 

The number of children rescued / withdrawn from work, rehabilitated and mainstreamed through the National Child Labour Project scheme to the formal education system during the last three years (2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19) was 30,979, 47,635 and 50,284 respectively, he added.

Reducing carbon footprint of steel industry

The government has facilitated the adoption of technologies for enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint in smaller steel plants of India in association with the United Nations Development Programme, Union Minister of Steel, Dharmendra Pradhan told the Rajya Sabha.
