Coronavirus update: 165 countries engaged in COVID-19 vaccine global access facility

India recorded the highest single-day spike of 32,695 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases as on July 16, 2020, taking the tally to 968,876. The toll rose by 606 to 24,915, according to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). A total of 612, 814 people have recovered so far. 

India is the third worst-hit country by the pandemic after the United States and Brazil.

The world had more than 13.6 million positive cases to SARS-CoV-2 virus, out of which 8.15 million have recovered. The United States registered 71,670 fresh cases as on July 15; its total tally is at 3.6 million.  

COVID-19 cases continued to decline in capital New Delhi, with the city registering more recoveries than new cases. As on July 15, the city saw 1,647 new cases and 2,463 fresh recoveries. 

• With 275,640 cases, Maharashtra is the worst-affected state in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu (151,820) and New Delhi (116,993), according to MoHFW.
• Maharashtra recorded 275, 640 cases and close to 11,000 fatalities as on July 16, 2020. 
• Karnataka reported its biggest single-day spike with 3,176 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total tally of those infected in the state to 47,253. The state has overtaken Gujarat as fourth worst-affected state in the country, according to news agency Press Trust of India. 
• A three-day lockdown with stricter provisions will be enforced in Goa from July 17, in view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the state, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on July 15.  

At least 75 countries have submitted expressions of interest to protect their populations and those of other nations through joining the COVAX Facility, a mechanism designed to guarantee rapid, fair and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) said July 15.

• The 75 countries, which would finance the vaccines from their own public finance budgets, partner with up to 90 lower-income countries that could be supported through voluntary donations to Gavi’s COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC), the apex global public health agency said.
• The goal of COVAX is by the end of 2021 to deliver two billion doses of safe, effective vaccines that have passed regulatory approval and/or WHO prequalification.
