India recorded 5,880 fresh COVID-19 cases as of 8 am, April 10, 2023, a marginal increase from the previous 24 hours, according to data from the health ministry. Some 5,357 cases were registered in the previous 24 hours. Currently, the active caseload is at 35,199.
The last time the country reported over 5,000 cases was in late September 2022.
With the daily positivity rate touching 6.91 per cent, several states began setting more stringent measures, including the mandatory usage of masks and social distancing. Haryana, Kerala and Puducherry have mandated the usage of masks in public places.

COVID-19 tests will be required for patients who arrive at the hospital with a cough and cold, announced Haryana’s health minister. District administrations and panchayats have been instructed to ensure the regulation is followed throughout Haryana.

“Wearing face masks will be made mandatory in the state, especially in crowded areas where the gathering is expected to be above 100 persons to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection,” Haryana health minister Anil Vij told Indian Express.
Kerala’s health minister Veena George announced on Saturday that 1,801 new COVID-19 cases had been registered in the state the previous day. The districts Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kottayam recorded the most number of cases.
The minister claimed most COVID-19 -related deaths were documented in those over 60 years and with co-morbidities, according to a report by the news agency PTI.

In light of the spike in cases over the past weeks, a countrywide drill is scheduled for today and tomorrow to assess the healthcare system’s emergency preparedness. The Union minister for health, Mansukh Mandaviya, will supervise the exercise at the All India Institute of Medical Science in Jhajjar, Haryana.
In the review meeting held last week, Mandaviya requested state health ministers to remain vigilant and assess the readiness of medical facilities.
According to the bulletin released on Sunday, 699 fresh COVID-19 cases were logged in Delhi. The city recorded up to four COVID-19-related fatalities in the previous day, bringing the total death toll to 26,540, according to media reports.
The current spike has contributed to an upsurge in the number of children under 12 years infected with the virus, reported The Times of India.
