Coronavirus update: Modi to speak tomorrow before lockdown runs out

- By April 13, 2020 evening, in India, 9,352 people had tested positive to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and 324 had died, according to the Union health ministry.
- Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan April 13 exhorted scientists to develop mitigation solutions for the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) within a fixed time frame.
- China restricted the publication of COVID-19 research, the CNN reported.
- The starting point of the global pandemic, meanwhile, had a spurt of more than 100 new cases and two deaths, according to aggregator Worldometer.info.
- The world total was at 1.86 million cases and 115,096 deaths.
- Nearly 4 per cent of the patients remained serious or critical.
- The United States continued to suffer the most with 0.56 million cases and 22,115 deaths.
- There was a spurt of 2,665 new cases in Spain and 280 deaths.
- The fatality rate slowed relatively in Italy and France, according to Al Jazeera.
- The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex closed down 1.5 per cent at 30,690.02 points; The National Stock Exchange Nifty fell 1.3 per cent to 8,993.85.
- China has imposed restrictions on the publication of academic research on the origins of the novel coronavirus, according to a central government directive and online notices published by two Chinese universities, that have since been removed from the web.
- In Uttar Pradesh’s Noida, two patients were readmitted to a hospital after being cleared for COVID-19, news channel NDTV reported.
- India’s death toll has exceeded 300.
- Maharashtra showed no signs of respite, registering 149 deaths and 1,985 cases.
- Delhi had 1,154 cases and 24 deaths.
- Tamil Nadu became the third state to cross the 1,000 mark. Though deaths there have remained at 11.
- Madhya Pradesh had the second-highest death toll at 36, followed by Gujarat with 25.
- Punjab recorded 11 deaths on 151 cases.
- Meghalaya, Nagaland and Sikkim remained the only states without any COVID-19 case; Among Union territories, Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar haveli have not reported any incident.
- Crowdsourcing website Covid19india.org pegged the numbers a little higher.
- The site estimated Mumbai’s case count at 1,357 and neighbouring Thane district’s 190. Pune had 266 cases.
- Chennai’s case count was at 200 while in Tamil Nadu's western industry cluster, Coimbatore had 119 cases, Erode 64 and Tirupur 64.
- Jaipur accounted for most of Rajasthan's caseload, with 341 positives.
- In MP, Indore had 311 cases while capital Bhopal had 134.
- In Gujarat, Ahmedabad had 295 cases while Vadodara had 102.
- Hyderabad had 197 cases while Nizamabad was close to 50.
- Tourist favourite Agra continued to top in UP, with 104 cases; Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) in the National Capital Region (NCR) had 62 cases. Meerut was also above 50.
- Most of Andhra's cases were in the southern cluster of Guntur (90), Kurnool (84), Nellore (51) and Prakasam.
- The situation has stabilised in Kerala, which reported India's first few cases. Kasargod (166) and Kannur (71) in the north continued to have the most cases.
- Information technology hub Bengaluru had 77 cases; Mysuru was near 50.
- Srinagar had more than 50 cases.
- In Haryana, most cases were concentrated in the southern districts in or adjoining NCR.
- In Punjab, SAS AJit Singh Nagar, neighbouring Chandigarh, had over 50 cases.
- A Punjab Police officer lost his hand in an attack while trying to enforce lockdown April 12 in Sanaur, Patiala, the Press Trust of India reported.
