Locust attack: India faces worst-ever pest invasion

Apart from India, the pests have attacked 60 countries including Pakistan and Somalia, that have declared national emergencies

  • We need to understand that locust infestations have always happened and that because of that we do know how to prevent them: setting up and maintaining an early warning system and preventative control is the strategy adopted by locust-affected countries in Africa and Asia to try to stop locust plagues from developing and spreading. Where these EWS function, locusts are controlled before they attain their gregarious state and this the ability of forming swarms to fly rapidly across great distances. Crops are therefore protected. But, of course, for many non framers, no infestation also means no huge moneys to buy pesticides and related equipments inclusive SUV and sweet per diems.So, let us keep an eye open and check WHY the surge of the current locusts infestations, beyond the ecological conditions, maybe looking at corporate interests...
