Coronavirus update: Spike in India death toll
Official record: 195 COVID-19 deaths in 24 hours

India lost 1,568 lives to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic by 8 am, May 5, 2020, according to the Union health ministry.
- In a space of 24 hours, 195 patients died — the most yet.
- The number of new cases — 3,900, in these 24 hours was also the most, taking the tally to 46,433 cases postitive to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
- With this, India’s active case count shot up to 32,138.
- The number of those discharged increased by 1,019.
- India has ramped up testing. By 9 am, May 5, 1,191,946 samples were tested, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research.
