Scientists attending the 102nd Indian Science Congress make some predictions

The theme of the 102nd session of the Indian Science Congress-Science and Technology for Human Development-happens to echo the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government's emphasis on "development". Down To Earth talked to experts at the conference on how science is likely to contribute to human development in the next few years and the achievements so far. Edited excerpts of their interviews

For years researchers and scientists in the country have lamented the fact that the government does not pay them the respect they and their findings deserve. They now have a opportunity to make their voices heard and the scientists already seemed more confident. And they were opinionated, too. However, some of the opinions were quite unsavoury and illogical. To what extent their suggestions and opinions are reflected in the overall governance is yet to be seen, but it is an interesting development to keep an eye on.
